Slav Bot Add to Discord

Moderation

Moderation lives in the same bot as the memes and games. Anyone with Manage Server sets it up in /admin, one page per topic. Automatic mutes, kicks and bans also need the matching permission.

Jump to: Act on a member · Scam pictures · Automod · Logs and alarms · The rest of the toolbox.

Act on a member

ban, unban, kick, mute (a timeout), unmute, warn, warnings, clearwarns, purge, nick and role.

The third warning gives a one-hour timeout. /mod opens a panel where you pick a member, see their record and act on it. There's also a right-click menu called Moderate.

What purge clears and what it skips

purge clears up to 1000 messages. It skips pinned messages and anything older than 14 days.

Try a warning

Press Warn them and see what the third warning does.

No warnings. Clean record.

Scam pictures

A scam can hide inside a picture, under a caption as harmless as lol look at this. Slav reads the words in the picture, and when they match a scam site or several scam phrases she knows, she takes the post down.

The pictures she reads

She reads the first two pictures in each message, whether members upload them, forward them or paste a link to one stored on Discord. She reads in the background, so a post comes down several seconds after it appears, and later when other pictures are waiting their turn.

What counts as a scam

A scam site from her list anywhere in the picture, like a lookalike Discord address. Or two or more scam phrases from her list, at least one of them about money, such as a promo code, free Nitro, a crypto casino or a dollar bonus.

When she finds one

She deletes the post. By default she also clears the poster's other recent messages in that channel and gives them a ten-minute timeout, and the admin can change both.

When a scam is caught: the five punishments

The admin picks the punishment.

  1. 1Just delete it
  2. 2A 10-minute mute (the default)
  3. 3A kick
  4. 4A softban: a ban then an unban, which wipes their last day of messages
  5. 5A ban

Who she skips

Moderators (anyone with Manage Messages, Timeout Members or Administrator), the people who run Slav, and other bots and webhooks unless an admin switches on Also scan bots.

The notice and the log

The channel gets a one-line notice that names the poster without pinging them and deletes itself after six seconds. If you set an automod log channel, moderators see there who posted it, which rule caught it and what was done. The removal also goes on that member's record in /mod, and the Automod page counts every catch.

The switch

It's called Scan images (OCR), on the Automod page of /admin. The same page sets the punishment, and Purge recent on scam turns the clearing of recent messages on or off.

The permissions she needs

Manage Messages in that channel to delete the post, and Timeout Members, Kick Members or Ban Members for the punishment you pick. Without Manage Messages she can only flag the post for a moderator, and without the others the punishment is skipped. The Add button on this site asks for all four (what each one does).

What she keeps

The picture is read on the machine Slav runs on. The words she reads from it stay in memory, where she stops using them after about 90 seconds, and they're never written to disk or sent anywhere. A removal is recorded with the rule and, for a scam site, which site on her list it was. The privacy policy has the rest.

Four lines through her rule

Each line below is made up and typed out, so there's no real picture behind it. Beside it is what her scam rule returns when the line goes through the bot's own code, and for a match, the label moderators see in the log.

Where it falls short

  • It only knows the scams on its list. Wording it has never seen goes straight through.
  • It can't tell a scam from a warning about one, so a screenshot posted to warn others gets the same treatment.
  • It reads words and nothing else, so a picture with no writing on it, nudity and gore all pass.
  • Blurry photos, tiny text and busy backgrounds often read as nothing.
  • It never opens a link to a picture on another site.
  • A picture pasted as a link can be up to 25 MB, since the 8 MB check only sees uploads.
  • When pictures arrive faster than she can read them, in one channel or across the bot, the extra ones are skipped and never read.
  • It reads English only, because the text reader and the phrase list are both English.

Anything it doesn't know about still needs a moderator.

The fine print on files, clearing, permissions and logs
  • She reads uploads up to 8 MB (PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, BMP and GIF). Of an animated GIF or WebP she reads only the first frame.
  • Clearing recent messages takes the poster's messages from the last ten minutes, among the last 50 in that channel.
  • An automatic mute never cuts short a longer timeout a moderator already gave.
  • To set the punishment to a mute, kick, softban or ban, you need that permission yourself, because Manage Server opens /admin but doesn't carry moderation powers.
  • Take Manage Messages away from her in one channel and she won't delete or punish anything there, only flag it.
  • The automod log quotes the words typed with the picture, unless the log channel is open to people who can't see the channel it came from.
  • If your server logs deleted messages, the removed post can show up in that log as well, picture included.
  • To film the filters working, the people who run Slav can open a test window in one server for up to two hours. While it's open the scan also checks one of them, or everyone there including moderators, and for those people it only deletes.

Automod

The scam picture scan above is on by default.

The other rules stay off until an admin turns them on. They block invite links to other servers (your own server's codes pass), spam, ALL-CAPS, mass mentions and the same message flooded across channels. An admin can have them check other bots too.

Logs and alarms

Each kind of log can have a channel of its own. There are logs for mod actions, automod hits, joins and leaves, message edits and deletes, voice activity, server changes and big game events. Who did it comes from Discord's audit log.

An anti-raid alarm posts an alert in your server, and messages the server's owner, when joins, bans, kicks, or channel and role changes spike.

The rest of the toolbox

  • Welcome and leave messages, and an auto-role for new members
  • Turning a command off in a single channel
  • A prefix of your own for each server
  • Switches that turn games off in your server (which ones)
  • A starboard that reposts starred messages as a card
  • Siberia, a trap channel. Anyone who isn't staff and posts in it gets the admin's choice of a softban, a ban, a kick or a one-day timeout
  • A Permissions page that shows what the bot can't do in your server and links the fix

Moderators can also ask Slav to act for them, behind a button that only they can press.
